Hansel and Gretel — Short Story (English)

Once upon a time a poor woodcutter lived at the edge of a great forest with his two children, Hansel and Gretel. A hard winter brought hunger to the house. Their stepmother whispered to the father that they must lead the children deep into the forest and leave them there, or all four would starve. The father’s heart was heavy, but at last he agreed.

That night Hansel heard the plan. He slipped outside and filled his pockets with small white pebbles that shone in the moonlight. In the morning the stepmother gave the children a small crust of bread and led them away. As they walked, Hansel dropped the stones behind him, one by one. After the parents left them by a fire and did not return, the moon rose; the pebbles gleamed like little stars and showed the way home.

Angry, the stepmother locked the door. Soon after, hunger came again. This time Hansel could not gather stones; he crumbled his bread and left a trail of crumbs. They were led even deeper among the trees, but when the moon rose the crumbs were gone—birds had eaten them. The children wandered for three days until they found a strange little house made of bread and sugar, with windows of clear sugar-glass.

As they broke off pieces to eat, an old woman opened the door. She seemed kind and invited them in, giving them milk and pancakes. But she was a wicked witch who lured children with sweets. The next morning she locked Hansel in a cage to fatten him and set Gretel to hard work. Each day she felt Hansel’s finger to see if he was growing plump; clever Hansel held out a thin bone, and the half-blind witch believed he was still too lean.

At last she grew impatient. “Tomorrow you will bake bread,” she said to Gretel. She heated the oven and told the girl to climb in to see if it was hot enough. Gretel pretended not to understand. The witch bent forward to show her; quick as a flash, Gretel pushed the witch into the oven and slammed the door.

Gretel freed Hansel, and in the witch’s house they found chests filled with pearls and jewels. They stuffed their pockets and set out. A white duck carried them over a wide river. At last they reached the edge of the forest and their father’s cottage. The stepmother had died; the father, who had never ceased to grieve, welcomed them with tears. The children poured the jewels onto the table, and from then on they lived together in joy and without want.

Bir varmış bir yokmuş, büyük bir ormanın kıyısında fakir bir oduncu ile iki çocuğu, Hansel ve Gretel yaşarmış. Sert bir kış yoksulluğu getirmiş. Üvey anneleri, babanın kulağına “Yoksa hepimiz açlıktan öleceğiz; çocukları ormanın derinlerine götürüp bırakalım,” diye fısıldamış. Babanın yüreği sızlamış ama sonunda razı olmuş.

O gece Hansel planı duymuş. Ay ışığında parlayan küçük beyaz çakıllarla ceplerini doldurmuş. Sabah üvey anne çocuklara birer kuru ekmek verip onları götürmüş. Yürürlerken Hansel çakılları birer birer yol boyunca bırakmış. Anne babaları onları bir ateşin yanında bırakıp dönmeyince, ay yükselmiş; çakıllar küçük yıldızlar gibi parlayıp eve giden yolu göstermiş.

Üvey anne öfkelenip kapıyı kilitlemiş. Çok geçmeden açlık yine gelmiş. Bu kez Hansel taş toplayamamış; ekmeğini ufalayıp kırıntılar halinde yol boyunca serpmiş. Daha da derinlere götürülmüşler; ama ay yükseldiğinde kırıntılar yokmuş—kuşlar yemiş. Çocuklar üç gün ormanda dolaşmış ve sonunda ekmek ve şekerden yapılmış, pencereleri şeker camından bir tuhaf ev bulmuşlar.

Yemek için duvardan parçalar koparırken kapıyı yaşlı bir kadın açmış. İyiliksever görünmüş, içeri çağırıp süt ve krep vermiş. Ama o, çocukları tatlılarla kandıran kötü bir cadıymış. Ertesi sabah Hansel’i şişmanlasın diye bir kafese kapamış, Gretel’e de ağır işler vermiş. Her gün Hansel’in parmağını yoklayıp semirdi mi diye bakarmış; kurnaz Hansel ince bir kemik uzatırmış, az gören cadı onun hâlâ zayıf olduğuna inanırmış.

Sonunda sabrı tükenmiş. “Yarın ekmek pişireceksin,” demiş Gretel’e. Fırını yakmış ve kıza, “Gir bak bakalım yeterince sıcak mı,” demiş. Gretel anlamazlıktan gelmiş. Cadı öne eğilip nasıl yapılacağını gösterirken Gretel bir hamlede onu fırının içine itmiş, kapağı kapatmış.

Gretel Hansel’i kurtarmış; cadının evinde inciler ve mücevherlerle dolu sandıklar bulmuşlar. Ceplerini doldurup yola koyulmuşlar. Beyaz bir ördek onları geniş bir nehrin karşısına geçirmiş. En sonunda ormanın kıyısına ve babalarının kulübesine varmışlar. Üvey anneleri ölmüş; babaları, hiç durmadan yas tutan o iyi adam, onları gözyaşlarıyla karşılamış. Çocuklar mücevherleri masaya dökmüş; o günden sonra hep birlikte mutlu ve yokluk çekmeden yaşamışlar.
